Formula E Develops Autonomous Car Championship
Kinetic, in partnership with Formula E, are developing driverless cars that will use AI to compete in races from 2016.
There has been much talk about driverless cars and we’re seeing an abundance of driver assistance technology, like autonomous emergency braking. To demonstrate the capability of driverless cars, electric vehicle racing series Formula E have partnered with Kinetik to announce the world’s first autonomous car race.
The Roborace, scheduled for the 2016/17 season, will involve ten teams using the same driverless race cars. The greatest challenge is in the development of a AI competitive software capable of dealing with real-time obstacles, car racing maneuvers, and ascertaining risk and reward scenarios. The races will take place on Formula E circuits in major cities around the world, with the aim of showcasing the performance capability of autonomous driving technology in a high speed, risky environment. Further details are set to be announced in early 2016.
