Smart Device Warns Cyclists About Upcoming Road Hazards
Byxee allows cyclists to avoid irregular road surfaces, by scanning the road ahead and alerting them of upcoming hazards. There are other devices also aiming to make urban cycling a safer experience, like Volvo Lifepaint a highly reflective temporary spray that illuminates cyclists and their equipment at night. And, WeCycle a tracking device that captures users cycling paths then pools the data to create heat maps for city planners.
Byxee is an advanced video system attached to the bicycle handlebars that spot hazards like potholes, gratings, bumps and tarmac patches up to 80 feet away. It does this by analyzing the shadows and contrasts created by road hazards then sounds a warning beep to avoid a collision. Byxee also detects obstacles such as animals, pedestrians, opening car doors and other moving obstacles.
Byxee is currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo, where pledgers can pre-order the device for $139 dollars. Byxee will be available in February 2016.
